For her unwavering commitment to supporting victims of domestic violence, Julie Barberio of Laurel House received high praise and a special commendation from Montgomery County’s top prosecutor.
During a ceremony at the Public Safety Training Campus in Plymouth Township, District Attorney Kevin R. Steele presented Barberio with a civilian commendation, recognizing her vital role in assisting survivors through difficult legal and emotional challenges, according to The Reporter.
Barberio’s dedication to helping victims secure protection and navigate the justice system is a testament to her life’s work, Steele said.
Laurel House, where she serves, is a nonprofit that provides crisis intervention, shelter, and essential resources for domestic abuse survivors in Montgomery County. Barberio was one of three civilians and 21 law enforcement officers recognized at Steele’s annual law enforcement commendation ceremony on May 13, a gathering meant to honor acts of heroism, compassion, and courage within the community.
Steele reflected on Barberio’s work with Elizabeth Shea, a Springfield Township woman trapped in an abusive marriage that tragically ended in her murder, per the report.
Elizabeth had suffered both emotional and physical abuse at the hands of her husband, Kenneth Shea. In early 2024, after a particularly violent incident that left her with a concussion, Elizabeth turned to the authorities for help. Working closely with police, Barberio helped her obtain a protection-from-abuse order and supported her efforts to secure safety for herself and her three sons, according to the report.
Tragically, the protection order and legal actions weren’t enough to prevent Kenneth Shea from breaking into Elizabeth’s home in April 2024, where he fatally stabbed her.
Barberio, however, didn’t stop her advocacy there. She became Elizabeth’s voice in court, testifying against Kenneth Shea at his preliminary hearing and helping to ensure justice was served, according to the article.
In June 2024, Kenneth pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Through her work, Barberio demonstrated the relentless compassion and strength needed to advocate for domestic abuse survivors.
