The Historical Society of Montgomery County will host a special event, “Colonial Days in the Perkiomen Valley,” on Wednesday, June 11, at 6:30 p.m. at its location at 1654 DeKalb Street in Norristown.
The event will focus on the demographic makeup of the Perkiomen Valley during the American Revolution, examining the often-overlooked presence of enslaved African Americans in the region.
Research associate Emma Hartman will present her findings, which challenge prevailing assumptions about the composition of the Perkiomen Valley population. Through her research, Hartman has identified a much higher proportion of enslaved African Americans in the area than is generally recognized.
The presentation will detail her research methods, including the primary sources used, and will explore the challenges of reconstructing the lives of individuals who left little to no written records.
The event will include a discussion session with Hartman following the presentation.
Seating is limited, and pre-registration is recommended. Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The program is free of charge, though a $5 donation is suggested to support the Historical Society’s programming. Limited off-street parking is available.
