A Pottstown man is facing multiple charges after allegedly refusing to leave a Skippack tavern while intoxicated and resisting arrest earlier this month, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Sean Michael Cohen, 35, of the 90th block of Linwood Circle in Pottstown, was arrested shortly after 12:30 a.m. on May 4 at the Dutch Cottage Tavern, located at 1264 Bridge Road in Skippack Township.
Troopers from Skippack barracks responded to a report of an intoxicated male causing a disturbance at the tavern. Employees told police that a man, later identified as Cohen, was refusing to leave the outdoor bar area, acting belligerently, recording the encounter on his phone, and stating he would likely fight the police if they arrived, troopers said.
According to the police report, troopers found Cohen in the rear outdoor bar area, where he was yelling and holding his phone up, apparently recording. Officers noted a strong odor of alcohol, slurred speech, and uncooperative behavior, police said. He was advised that he was causing a disturbance and asked to leave the property.
Police escorted Cohen to the rear parking lot and asked how he planned to get home. He allegedly said he would call an Uber, but then refused to do so. When troopers warned that he could be arrested for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct if he did not leave, Cohen allegedly continued arguing and yelling, refusing to comply.
When troopers attempted to place him under arrest, Cohen pulled away, thrashed, and continued to yell, police said. Two more troopers arrived to assist. During the struggle with the four troopers, Cohen allegedly grabbed a trooper’s shirt collar and pulled off a uniform tie, then rolled onto his stomach and tucked his arms underneath him, refusing to comply with commands to place his hands behind his back.
After a warning, a trooper used a Taser on the back of Cohen’s left arm to gain compliance, according to the complaint. Cohen was then taken into custody.
He has been charged with misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, summary public drunkenness, and felony criminal trespassing, police said.
Cohen is free on $2,500 unsecured bond and has a preliminary hearing set for June 25 at 10:30 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Adam T. Katzman. He is represented by attorney Vincent Vangrossi of Norristown.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
