Jameer Nelson's basketball journey added another interesting chapter Tuesday, with the Sixers promoting him to assistant general manager:
The Philadelphia 76ers are promoting Jameer Nelson to assistant general manager, sources tell ESPN. The 14-year NBA veteran and one-time All-Star is a Pennsylvania native and has served a scout and G League GM for the 76ers since 2020.
Nelson, of course, went to Chester High School before a decorated collegiate career playing under Phil Martelli at St. Joe's. Nelson was voted the AP Player of the Year in 2003-04, helping the Hawks to win the A10 title and reach the Final Four. In the aforementioned senior season at St. Joe's, Nelson averaged 20.6 points per game, with he and Delonte West becoming one of the greatest one-two punches in Big 5 history.
A first-round pick of the Denver Nuggets in 2004, Nelson had a 14-year career, spending the first decade with the Orlando Magic. He was an All-Star in 2008-09, and scored more than 9,900 points in his NBA career.
Now 43, Nelson returns to Philly after having served as the general manager for the G League affiliate Delaware Blue Coats since November of 2020.
