Police warn all vehicle models are at risk and share essential tips to protect your car

  • Public Safety

Upper Providence Police are warning residents of a growing issue of car thefts in the township, wherein thieves are using technology to capture and steal key fob signals, especially for keyless Hondas.

Police advised all makes and models are at risk.

Investigators provided the following tips for residents to protect their vehicles and property:

Protect Your Key Fob Signal

  • Use a Faraday Bag/Box: When you're not using your key fob, store it inside a Faraday bag or box. This blocks the signal and prevents thieves from copying it, police said.
  • Keep Fobs Away from Doors/Windows: If you don't have a Faraday bag, keep your key fob as far from your car as possible, away from doors and windows, police said.
  • Turn Off "Keyless" Features (If Possible): Police said some cars allow you to disable the keyless entry function. Check with your car's manual or dealership for options.

Regular Car Theft Prevention

  • Lock Your Car & Double-Check: Always lock your vehicle, even when parked in your driveway or garage. Double-check to make sure it's properly secured, police said.
  • Park in Well-Lit Areas: Police recommended always park in well-lit and populated areas. If possible, park in a garage or secure parking lot.
  • Install a Car Alarm or Tracking System: Consider investing in a car alarm or GPS tracking system that can alert you or authorities if your car is tampered with, police said.
  • Remove Valuables: Do not leave valuables visible in your vehicle. Even small items can be a target for thieves.
  • Steering Wheel Locks & Other Anti-Theft Devices: Invest in physical deterrents like steering wheel locks that make it harder for thieves to steal your vehicle, according to police.

Stay Vigilant

Be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to local authorities. The more eyes on the street, the safer our community will be.
