Tuesday evening, the Phillies will begin a three-game series against the Houston Astros, the team that infamously took them down and ended the magic in the 2022 World Series.
But are the Astros still the same team they were in 2022?
And for that matter, are the Phillies still the same team they were in 2022?
Let's take a look at the players remaining on each team from their 2022 World Series rosters.
Phillies
Dave Dombrowski has kept much of the same core from 2022 together to this day. Of the 2022 26-man World Series roster, 12 players are still with the Phillies at the major league level:
Obviously, Harper hasn't remained at DH, a spot he was only at because he needed Tommy John surgery on his elbow. Schwarber has come in from left field and now DHs almost exclusively.
But of the Phillies' lineup from Game 1 of the World Series, the only players no longer on the team are Rhys Hoskins and Jean Segura. Even Game 1 defensive substitution Edmundo Sosa is still around.
All things considered, this team has quite the track record of consistency and carryover for a club nearly three years removed from that World Series appearance.
Astros
The Astros actually have just one fewer returning player than the Phillies do. They clock in at 11 players remaining from 2022. However, take a look at the list, and something will jump out at you pretty quickly.
Of these 11 players, only six are actually active at the moment. The other five are recovering from various injuries: Garcia and Javier are both rebounding from Tommy John; McCullers sprained his foot in a freak weight room accident; Alvarez has a fractured right hand; and McCormick has an oblique strain.
All things considered, if you've been brave enough to rewatch the 2022 World Series (or if it's burned into your memory), you'll hear some familiar names on the Astros this week. But you won't hear that many.
