Philadelphia’s seventh-inning surge denies Collegeville sweep in PVTL semifinals
The Collegeville White Sox were three outs away from a series sweep in the Perkiomen Valley Twilight League semifinals, but a stunning seventh-inning rally by the Philadelphia Dirt Dawgs turned the tide in Game 3 on Wednesday night.
According to The Mercury, Collegeville carried a 1-0 lead into the top of the seventh at Gwynedd Mercy University behind six scoreless innings from starter Jason Hughes, who struck out eight and repeatedly worked out of jams.
But with reliever Nick Todero on the mound, Philadelphia’s offense came alive, sparked by a key error and a pair of stolen bases, per the gameplay report. With the bases loaded and one out, Aidan Bretschneider delivered a crushing, bases-clearing triple to the gap in left center. A sacrifice fly moments later extended the lead to 4-1.
Despite a valiant push in the bottom of the seventh — including a bases-loaded situation with no outs — Collegeville came up short, per the article.
A lineout double play and a groundout ended the comeback attempt, with the White Sox settling for a 4-2 loss and a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five semifinal series.
Collegeville will have another chance to punch its ticket to the PVTL championship when the series resumes with Game 4 at 5:45 p.m. Thursday at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth Township.
