Montgomery County’s Pottsgrove Manor will host special Open House Days every Saturday in August from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering visitors a chance to discover different aspects of colonial life each week. Activities include colonial music, 18th-century foodways, blacksmithing demonstrations, artifact interaction, and period games. The manor’s first floor will also be open for self-guided tours during each open house.

Saturday, August 2: Artifact Interaction

August Open House Days kick off with Artifact Interaction! Join our special guest curators from Winterthur for a dying workshop and exploration of the red dyes produced by using cochineal beetles. Afterward, strike up a conversation with Pottsgrove Manor’s curator to investigate a few of our own colorful collections on display. The first 20 visitors will also receive a voucher for discounted entry on a future visit to Winterthur.

Saturday, August 9: Historic Blacksmithing

Take in the sights and sounds of historic blacksmithing. Iron was the lifeblood of the Potts family and the surrounding community. Learn more about iron’s final stop in the production process with blacksmithing demonstrations. Historic blacksmith, P.C. Janusz, will be on site all day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., walking guests through this timeless trade.

Saturday, August 16: Colonial Cooking

Hungry for history? Bite into the past with cooking demonstrations in Pottsgrove Manor’s kitchen. Living history interpreters will be on site in the kitchen and at the bake oven, presenting the foodways of colonial America.

Saturday, August 23: Musical Traditions

It’s a feast for your ears! Join harpist Betsy Chapman for an afternoon of historical harmony and discover the rich musical traditions of the colonial era. Explore the first floor of Pottsgrove Manor as the music of the past echoes through the halls and parlors of this Georgian gem.

August 30: Play the 18th-century Way

Music isn’t the only thing to be played here at the Manor! Ditch the screens and play the 18th-century way with toys and games outside, and board games inside.

Suggested $2 donation per guest for each event. Outdoor activities may be modified due to inclement weather.
