County, DEP aim to control adult mosquito population

  • Public Safety

The Montgomery County Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) Office of Public Health (OPH), after consulting with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) and the Borough of Collegeville and Upper Providence Township officials, will be spraying to control the adult mosquito population in selected areas. The spraying will be done where sampling by OPH and PADEP found mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus (WNV).

Weather permitting, the spray event will occur on Thursday, July 24, 2025, from approximately 8:30 to 11 p.m. The alternate date will be Monday, July 28. All areas within the highlighted sections of the pictured map will be subject to spraying. Border roads include Route 29 (Second Avenue), East Main Street, Yerkes Road, and Perkiomen Creek. Residents within the spray area should consider remaining indoors, closing windows, and turning off ventilation systems that draw outside air for the duration of the spray plus 30 minutes afterward.

Workers will be using Duet® Duel-Action Adulticide at a rate of 0.75 fluid ounces per acre applied with a truck mounted Ultra Low Volume (ULV) sprayer. The spray will be performed by OPH personnel.

OPH will work with appropriate agencies to identify, eliminate, and/or treat with larvicide, areas where mosquitoes are breeding. Residents may contact OPH at 610-278-5117 or publichealth@montgomerycountypa.gov if they are concerned about an area of standing water that may be breeding mosquitoes. The adult mosquito control program will only be used in limited situations to reduce disease-infected adult mosquitoes.

Tips to eliminate mosquito-breeding areas:

  • Check and repair windows and screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.
  • Regularly survey your property and eliminate standing water and dispose of containers that can collect standing water such as old tires, cans, bottles, buckets, and toys. Anything that can hold water for five days can breed thousands of mosquitoes. Eliminating standing water has proven effective in controlling mosquito populations and the spread of diseases they carry.
  • After it rains, empty plant containers, bird baths, flowerpots, kiddie pools, and pool covers to keep water from collecting in them.
  • Make sure roof gutters drain properly, and rooftops are free of standing water.
  • Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas, and hot tubs. Keep them empty and covered if not in use; drain water that collects in pool covers.
  • Drill several holes in the bottom of recycling buckets so water can drain from them. Cover trash and recycling bins so that rain cannot accumulate in them.
