A Pottstown man is facing a felony burglary charge after police said he was caught driving a stolen SUV loaded with stolen power tools from a nearby residential break-in.

Marcus Tian Washington, 46, of the 2100 block of Buchert Road in Pottstown, was arrested July 12 by Lower Providence Township Police following a traffic stop near Egypt Road and Shannondell Drive.

According to the criminal complaint, officers were alerted to a stolen blue Mitsubishi Outlander with Pennsylvania plates traveling through the intersection of Egypt Road and South Trooper Road around 2:18 p.m. The alert, issued via the VIPR system, noted that Washington was the suspect in the vehicle theft and had multiple active warrants for his arrest, police said.

An officer later spotted the SUV in the area of Woodland Avenue and Brimfield Road and initiated a stop around 2:46 p.m. With assistance from West Norriton Police, Washington was taken into custody without incident, police said.

Police said that while clearing the vehicle, officers observed a large black trash bag filled with power tools in the back seat. A short time later, dispatchers notified police of a just-reported burglary on the 200 block of Lauman Avenue, less than a mile from where the SUV had been spotted earlier.

The victim was brought to the scene and immediately identified Washington as the person he saw during the break-in, police said. Carson also confirmed that the Mitsubishi Outlander was the same vehicle parked outside his residence during the theft, according to investigators.

Back at the police station, Washington was read his Miranda rights and waived them, according to the affidavit, and then admitted to taking the tools.

Washington is also charged with felony criminal trespass, two counts of misdemeanor receiving stolen property, misdemeanor theft, and a summary offense for driving with a suspended license.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 5 before Magisterial District Judge Cathleen Kelly Rebar. He is being held at Montgomery County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
