  • Things To Do

Penn State Extension will offer a four-day workshop designed to increase working tree knowledge and prepare participants for the International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist exam.

The “Arborist Short Course” workshop is an in-person course aimed at arborists and other tree workers, landscape contractors, municipal workers, landscape architects, and park and grounds maintenance staff, but is open to all who wish to attend. Organizers point out that while the course provides good preparation for the arborist certification exam, the exam is not included with this course. Those wanting to take the exam need to apply to take the exam with ISA.

The fall workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 15, 16, 17 and 18 at the Penn State Extension York County office, located at 2401 Pleasant Valley Road, York.

Homeowners and municipalities today recognize the need for trained and knowledgeable tree care workers, according to organizers. They noted that ISA certification will improve an arborist’s marketability because it denotes a level of professionalism that most arborists do not have and helps to ensure quality, science-based tree work to protect tree health while keeping people and property safe.

Workshop instructors will discuss diagnosis of plant diseases and insect pests; nutrition and fertilization; selection, installation and establishment of trees and shrubs; soil and water interaction and management; plant identification; assessment and risk management; pruning; construction impacts and management; and safety and climbing.

The “Arborists’ Certification Study Guide” is required for the course. Participants can purchase the guide when registering, or they can register without the study guide and bring a copy they already have purchased or borrowed.

The registration deadline is Sept. 10.
