 Dear Collegeville Neighbors,

In times of overwhelming change and uncertainty, we must take a deep breath and focus on what we can control. The constant influx of Executive Orders and rapid policy changes from the Oval Office can leave us disoriented, discouraged, and powerless. But we’re not alone in this experience.

Sociologists and media theorists have long recognized the impact of information overload on our ability to process and engage effectively. Some power brokers intentionally overload us so we cannot plan to resist and protest policies that negatively impact us. For many, the current situation may feel particularly challenging. If Collegeville is to remain a “Great Place to Come Home to” and if we and our neighbors hope to live in spaces and places where the dignity and basic humanity of everyone is affirmed and respected, I would suggest some self-care and community-care strategies to help navigate these trying times:

  1. Set Boundaries: We can’t keep track of everything, and that’s okay. Choose 2-3 key issues that resonate most with you and focus your attention there.
  2. Find Trusted Sources: Seek out reliable experts and analysts who can provide in-depth explanations and context, helping you see the bigger picture.
  3. Take Breaks: It’s crucial to step away from the constant stream of information overload and recharge. Feeling overwhelmed is a natural response, but it shouldn’t paralyze us.
  4. Go Slow: Avoid immediate reactions to new policies or events. Take time to process information and understand its potential implications.
  5. Connect with Others: Share your thoughts and concerns with friends, family, and community members. Engaging in thoughtful conversations can help us process information and find strength in collective wisdom.

Remember, focus and resilience are potent tools in challenging times. We can navigate these uncertain waters by setting boundaries, finding trusted sources, taking breaks, slowing down, and connecting with others.

Sincerely,

Mayor Aidsand “Ace” Wright-Riggins
