A Pennsylvania State Police corporal out of the Skippack barracks originally charged with felony unauthorized use of a computer and misdemeanor misapplication of entrusted property for allegedly using his work computer to store thousands of pornographic images, including A.I.-generated pornographic media, or “deepfakes,” has been charged again, this time with more than 500 felonies.

Stephen M. Kamnik, 38, of the 700 block of Beechwood Drive, Havertown, has been a trooper since 2011, and is currently suspended without pay.

He was previously free on $1,000 bail, but is now at Montgomery County jail on $500,000 cash bail.

The new charges are related to Kamnik allegedly secretly filming dozens of individuals he came into contact with while on police duty, and repeatedly entering a women’s locker room at the state police station and taking photos, according to the affidavit.

Kamnik is charged with the following:

  • Two felony counts of sexual abuse of children
  • One count of felony receiving stolen property
  • 28 counts of felony unlawful use of a computer
  • 517 counts of felony unlawful duplication of computer software
  • 35 counts of felony interception of communications
  • 9 counts of felony criminal trespass
  • 6 counts of misdemeanor invasion of privacy by videotaping or photographing intimate parts of another person
  • 7 counts of misdemeanor official oppression
  • One count of misdemeanor misapplication of entrusted property of government
  • One count of misdemeanor tampering with evidence
  • One count of misdemeanor unlawful use of an audio/visual device in court

“This defendant swore an oath to protect and serve the people of the Commonwealth and in doing so was entrusted with resources to uphold that oath. Instead, he used his power and the trust placed in him to prey on innocent and unsuspecting coworkers and create sexually abusive material, some involving depictions of children,” State Attorney General Dave Sunday said. “His alleged conduct is an affront to Pennsylvania State Police troopers and law enforcement officers everywhere who honorably protect our communities every day.”

According to Sunday, an investigation by the state police Internal Affairs Division and the attorney general’s office revealed that, Kamnik allegedly misused commonwealth computer resources for years for his own personal sexual gratification. Futhermore, his cell phone and an external hard drive from his home revealed evidence that he also used a secured database, JNET, to obtain hundreds of photographs — in violation of JNET usage policies, authorities said.

Kamnik also had a stolen .22-caliber handgun in his possession, which was reported stolen from a burglary in Berks County in 2010.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
