Four pitchers in MLB history have a career WHIP of 1.00 or below as Phillies against the Braves franchise (min. 100 innings pitched, data to 1901).
Three of the four, unsurprisingly, pitched during the dead ball era:
- Phils righthander Frank Corridon held the franchise to a 1.00 WHIP from 1904 through 1909. Corridon threw 136 innings and never allowed an earned run. (He did allow 37 unearned runs, according to Baseball Reference. Either this is a missing data issue or Rhys Hoskins was in left field during those years.)
- RHP Tully Sparks threw 170.1 innings with a 0.963 WHIP against the franchise as a Phillie from 1903 through 1909.
- From 1908 through 1916, Phillies RHP George McQuillan maintained a 0.933 WHIP and 0.11 ERA in 163 innings against the franchise.
McQuillanBut at the top of the list, we find a guy who has maintained a 0.920 WHIP against the Braves in 104.1 innings. And that's the Atlanta Braves, not the Milwaukee Braves or the Boston Braves or the Beaneaters or the Bees or the Doves or the Dung Beetles. (Only one of those is made up, FYI.)
In fact, the guy at the top of the list still pitches for the Phillies.
In fact-ier, the guy at the top of the list pitches for the Phillies against the Braves Tuesday night.
We're speaking, of course, about Zachary Harrison Wheeler.
Wheeler has a career 0.920 WHIP in 104.1 innings against the Braves as a Phillie. That's pitching with a live ball from 2020 through 2024, an era where the Braves have been a very strong team.
Here are the 20 Phillies pitchers with the best career WHIP against the Braves franchise.
You know Wheeler is doing something right when he easily beats out legends like Steve Carlton and Robin Roberts. And you know he's doing something truly special when he's even ahead of Grover Cleveland Alexander.
Wheeler will pitch against defending NL Cy Young Chris Sale in Atlanta on Tuesday.
Take the under.
