The Perkiomen Valley School Board, along with Superintendent Dr. Barbara Russell, congratulated 15 high school students Monday night who helped change lives for students in Peru over eight days this summer.
“In July 2024, with the support and encouragement of their parents, 15 students from Perkiomen Valley High School embarked on an eight-day journey, spending the majority of their time in the Sacred Valley of Peru,” said Russell. “The students immersed themselves in the new culture, tasting unfamiliar foods, navigating a foreign language, and managing a different currency.”
Russell said the students visited one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and explored ancient Inca ruins and art forms and techniques passed down through generations.
“But more than just observing, they gave back,” Russell said. “They offered their time, energy, and compassion to a local community and to girls their age who, without the support of individuals and organizations from the private sector, would not have access to education.”
The high schoolers learned how to make mud bricks, from digging up the soil to sun-drying the bricks.
“Side by side with locals, they created about 180 bricks, which will help expand the existing boarding school and dormitory,” Russell said. “As they molded the bricks, they also shaped themselves into exemplary global citizens.”
The following students were recognized by the Board:
