Whether you are looking for a way to unwind, or a fun family event for the weekend, there is plenty of excitement right here in the Perkiomen Valley. Take a look at This Week Now, spanning Monday, Sept. 9 through Sunday, Sept. 15.
Running to coincide with the “All Aboard the Perkiomen Railroad” exhibit at Pennypacker Mills, the Perkiomen Valley Library at Schwenksville will host an educational program on the topic with Steve Mallon, president of the Perkiomen Railroad Historical Society on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. Registration is requested, and can be done by calling 610-287-8390 or emailing PerkValLib@gmail.com. The library is located at 290 Second St., in Schwenksville.
Additionally, Lower Frederick Township’s Park and Recreation Department will host a Perkiomen Pacers: Perkiomen Railroad Trail Walk on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to noon. The rain date for the event is Sunday, Sept. 15 at the same time. The starting point will be Foy Park, located at 3 Foy Park Dr., Schwenksville. Today’s trail rests on the former bed of the historic Perkiomen Line of the rail system. Guests who the walk along will learn about the history of the area and get in some exercise! The Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy will host a “2024 Perkiomen Plant-a-Thon” planting session on Thursday, Sept. 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. The organization has a lofty goal of planting 5,000 native trees, shrubs, and perennials within the area of the Watershed. Those interested can sign up for the event here.
On Sunday, Sept. 15 at 9 a.m., you can get the blood flowing with the “Race Back to School” a 5K Walk/Run with Methacton’s Education Foundation at Heebner Park, located at 1721 S. Valley Forge Road, Collegeville. Tickets for the walk are available online here. The cost for all ages is $35 for the 5K at 9 a.m. At 8:30 a.m., there is also a Kids’ Fun Run/Walk, which is untimed and designed for those 12 and under, for $20 per child. Bib pick-up will be open at 7:30 a.m. Participants will receive a T-shirt, refreshment and snacks, water stations along the course, and prizes for the top finishers. Those 21 and over can also get a free beverage at TimeOut Skippack, during the event’s After Party.
Also taking place on Sunday, Sept. 15, from noon to 4 p.m. will be the Skippack Township’s Community Day. This inaugural event will feature free, family fun with live music, food trucks (including pictured "The Fitz" barbecue truck), rides, and games at the Farm, Home, and Youth Center (formerly the 4H Center) at 1015 Bridge Road, in Collegeville. Live music will be provided by Ava DiFiore and MONTY, while children can enjoy inflatables, a rock wall, train rides, and an obstacle course, too!
