Two Upper Providence Township Police officers were recently recognized for their bravery and response to a cardiac emergency involving a township resident, who would later pass away at the hospital.

On Sept. 26, Chief Mark Freeman commended exemplary actions of Officers Jullian Keys and Troy Viola for actions in a medical emergency on Aug. 9, 2024.

The commendation stated:

Dear Officers Jullian Keys and Troy Viola,

I am writing to formally commend both of you for your exceptional response and performance during the recent cardiac emergency involving Mrs. Marie Herndon on August 9, 2024.

Upon your arrival, you encountered a very dire situation with Mrs. Herndon having no pulse. Your immediate and coordinated actions in providing CPR and other life-saving measures were nothing short of exceptional. Thanks to your skillful and determined efforts, Mrs. Herndon regained a pulse by the time she was transported to the hospital.

Your dedication did not end there. I am particularly impressed by how you both worked together, with fire and E.M.S. personnel, to safely carry Mrs. Herndon down a narrow stairway, ensuring her prompt and secure transport despite the challenging conditions. This level of commitment to ensuring the best possible outcome in a critical situation is exemplary.

Although Mrs. Herndon sadly passed away a few days later, her son has expressed profound gratitude for the extra time he was able to spend with his mother, thanks to your efforts. This additional time was invaluable to him, and it is a testament to the positive and lasting impact of your actions.

Your professionalism, teamwork, and compassion during this challenging situation reflect the highest standards of our department. I want to extend my deepest thanks and congratulations to both of you for your outstanding service and dedication.

Your actions are a shining example of the vital role we play in our community and the profound difference we can make in the lives of those we serve.

Thank you for your exemplary service and commitment to excellence.
