It is bad enough citizens dread that letter for jury duty, but making it the focus of a Bitcoin scam is even worse.

The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and Sheriff Sean Kilkenny are warning the public about a recent holiday phone scam, involving a perpetrator impersonating a county sheriff.

Authorities said the scammer tells the victim that a warrant has been issued for their arret for failing to appear for jury duty.

Then, the resident is told they can avoid arrest by depositing cash at a local Bitcoin ATM for a bond, police said.

The scammer also states that the judge issued an order saying the resident cannot tell anyone about it, police said.

Anyone who has been a victim of one of these calls and turned over money to the fraudster is asked to contact the Montgomery County Detective Bureau at 610-278-3368 to speak to a detective.
