Robotics are always welcome in schools, but artificial intelligence may not be, at least in Perkiomen Valley School District.

According to WFMZ, the Perkiomen Valley School Board is considering implementing a policy to limit generative AI in the district’s classrooms.

As directors work on examining new policies and revamping old ones, the issue generative AI in the district’s educational environment may lead to a policy stipulating proper management and use of such AI.

According to the report, the first step is defining traditional AI versus generative AI, with the former referring to problem solving, face recognition and answering questions whereas the latter is a learning part of AI. With generative AI, the system creates new content by gleaning information from large amounts of existing data.

The main issue with Perkiomen Valley administrators is that generative AI can infringe upon human creativity.

The board chose to discuss an agenda for AI use and how to develop a policy and promote goals of the policy.
