The 1-million-gallon water storage tank owned by Pennsylvania American Water will be getting a $1.4 million rehabilitation this year.
According to Vista Today, the Lower Providence storage tank is one of 10 water storage tanks that will be refurbished under the water company’s 2024 tank infrastructure plan, estimated at a total cost of $28.3 million.
The rehabilitation includes inspection, sandblasting, and then repainting the storage tanks, in order to extend service lives and improve water quality, per the report. Repainting includes stripping the original paint off the tank, and then applying a new coating. According to PA American Water Vice President of Engineering Bruce Aiton, the rehabilitation is more cost-efficient than replacement.
The Lower Providence storage tank is the only PA American Water-owned tank in Montgomery County to be included in its investment plan.
PA American Water is, however, constructing four new water tanks, ranging in volume from 200,000 gallons to 3.5 million gallons, in four counties in Pennsylvania.
