Two money scam incidents occurred in Skippack Township in April and May, involving scammers posing as a utility company and as a manager of a business, according to Pennsylvania State Police at Skippack.
On April 10, at noon, a 32-year-old man from the area of Lantern Lane and Carriage Drive in Skippack reported he was scammed of $1,459 by an unknown person claiming to represent a utility company, police said.
In the second incident, on May 15 at 11:54 a.m., a 21-year-old woman from Collegeville reported a scam that occurred on Evansburg Road in Skippack Township, police said.
The woman told police she received an email, later revealed to be fraudulent, from an unknown person claiming to be her manager, police said. The scammer convinced the 21-year-ols via email to drive to multiple stores to purchase gift cards, and then provide the barcodes of each gift card to the "manager," per the complaint. The scammer, police said, wanted the barcodes so that they could access the money on the cards.
