A Spring City man faces misdemeanor DUI charges and reckless endangerment offenses for allegedly hitting two parked cars while driving intoxicated on Game Farm Road in Lower Frederick Township and then fleeing the scene on foot.
Paul Edward Carey, 35, of the 70th block of Baptist Church Road, had a BAC level of .145%, according to Pennsylvania State Police. In addition to the misdemeanor DUI and two misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment, Carey was also charged via summons July 17 with misdemeanor DUI/unsafe driving and summary offenses of failure to provide information or render aid to those in an accident, careless driving, failure to drive on the right side of the roadway, speeding, and driving with a suspended or revoke license, according to court documents.
State police were dispatched to a report of a multiple vehicle crash and suspected DUI blocking the roadway at 45 Game Farm Road on June 29, 2024 at 10:17 p.m., police said.
Upon arrival, police found a three-vehicle crash blocking the westbound lane.
Police said Carey, driving a blue 2011 Honda Odyssey SUV, crossed over the white fog lines of the road and struck a vehicle that was parked and occupied. Carey then, police allege, hit another parked vehicle that was unoccupied.
Carey fled the scene of the crash on foot prior to Pennsylvania State Police arrival, per the complaint. The victim in the occupied vehicle told police they were able to identify Carey as the driver and that he was heavily intoxicated, police said.
Carey was eventually found one-half mile from the crash scene on Smith Road in Lower Frederick Township, heavily intoxicated, police said.
Police said Carey had dilated pupils, glassy, bloodshot eyes, and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. When asked if he consumed any alcohol, Carey said “I had two,” police said.
Field sobriety tests were not conducted, due to Carey fleeing the scene, being heavily intoxicated, and the road placement, police said.
Carey was placed under arrest for suspected DUI, and police administered a breathalyzer at 11:12 p.m. to Carey, which resulted in a BAC of .145%, police said.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 20 at 9:45 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Maurice H. Saylor, per court records.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
