A 67-year-old Skippack Township man was the victim of a forgery and counterfeiting crime by an unknown individual or individuals, in which a check was stolen from the mail, rewritten for a higher amount, and then successfully cashed via remote deposit.
Pennsylvania State Police said the victim reported the theft and forgery on Tuesday at 10:12 a.m.
Police said the man mailed a $183.27 check to PECO in his Squirrel Hill Road mailbox on July 1 at 2 p.m., before the mail delivery truck arrived.
Almost two weeks later, the victim found out the check he mailed was cashed via mobile deposit to an unknown individual on July 6 and cleared his bank account on July 12 – for $5,183.27.
The thief added a “5” in front of the original payment amount on the check.
Call police at 610-584-1250 with any information on the individuals involved in the scheme.
