An Upper Salford man faces a felony count of fleeing and eluding police and misdemeanor DUI after a June incident where authorities allege he crashed his 1983 Yamaha motorcycle during a police pursuit on Old Sumneytown Pike and ejected him into the woods.

Aidan M. Derstine, 24, of the 2000 block of Perkiomenville Road, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, also faces charges of failure to keep right, disregarding traffic lanes, speeding, turning without a signal, improper passing, running four stop signs, failure to yield to traffic at a yield sign, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving without a valid inspection and valid insurance, driving with an expired emissions sticker, driving without headgear, careless driving, reckless driving, and use of an improper class of license, according to court records.

Pennsylvania State Police said the crash occurred at 12:35 a.m. at Old Sumneytown Pike at Old Skippack Road as Derstine was speeding eastbound on Old Sumneytown Pike on a 1983 Yamaha XJ750K during a pursuit with Skippack troopers.

While attempting to turn left at a fork in the road, Derstine, police allege, exhibited unsafe, careless, and reckless driving, losing control of the bike, veering off the right side of the road into a ditch.

After the impact, the bike became airborne, overturned several times, and crashed facing west in a grassy, wooded area with sustaining any damage, police said.

Derstine, who was not wearing a helmet or eyewear, was ejected from the bike, and landed facing east in the same ditch, suffering minor, non-life-threatening injuries to his head and left leg, police said.

After a brief foot pursuit, officers captured Derstine, who displayed multiple signs of alcohol and controlled substance impairment, police said.

Plymouth Ambulance arrived on scene, per the affidavit, treated Derstine’s injuries, and took him to Grand View Hospital for further treatment and evaluation. After being cleared for incarceration at the hospital, Derstine was taken to the state police barracks at Skippack for processing and immediately taken to Montgomery County jail for a pre-trail arraignment hearing, police said.

Derstine spent 10 days in Montgomery County jail before posting $2,500 cash bail on June 20, set at arraignment June 10 by Magisterial District Judge Henry J. Schireson. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 16 at 9 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Maurice H. Saylor

Derstine has retained attorney Dana Greenspan, per court documents.

Pennsylvania State Police were assisted at the scene by Upper Perk Police Department, Plymouth Community Ambulance EMS, and Upper Salford Volunteer Fire Co.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
