Enjoy a guided walking tour of Historic Montgomery Cemetery with Historical Society Executive Director Barry Rauhauser on Aug. 19.
After the tour, watch the rising of the fully illuminated Sturgeon Moon. The phenomenon of a full moon arises when our planet, Earth, is precisely sandwiched between the sun and the moon. This alignment ensures the entire side of the Moon that faces us gleams under sunlight that is reflected back.
With almost 6,000 known burials, Montgomery Cemetery holds the remains of some of the most prominent citizens, veterans and reformers in the county and nation. From five Civil War generals to many captains of industry, it tells the story of the nation through the lives it represents. Over 400 veterans are buried in Montgomery Cemetery from the War of 1812 through the Korean War. The cemetery is no longer an active burial ground but is preserved as a link to the past.
The walking tour begins at 7:15 p.m., with moon rise approximately 8 p.m.
Tickets are $10 per person. To purchase tickets and/or RSVP call the Historical Society of Montgomery County at 610.272.0297 or email: contact@hsmcpa.org.
